Working/Relocating In/To Egypt

Salaam,

I hope this message reaches you all in the best of health and imaan.  I am quite interested in working and studying in Egypt. Currently I am a Java Software Engineer working here in United States at IBM and would like to relocate to Cairo.  I have quite extensive knowledge in developing Java-based software systems.  Here in the U.S it is quite difficult to work and study at the same time due to the demands of the job.  How is it like in Egypt?  How is the work schedule?  Do you think it is feasible for someone to work in the IT field and study at the same time?  And what would be your recommendations for finding a job in Egypt?  Should I take some time off and come over to Egypt and apply in person?  Any tips would be welcome.  I have previously lived in Cairo briefly and would like to return.  Thanks in advance.

Salaam,

Ibrahim

It depends

Well, it depends on the place you'll be workin in, some place can afford you leave early to catch your lecture, other don't.
Also, you can't tell that the workin condition will be suitable to work and study at the same time.
anyway, you'll need to make some kind of check before applying in any company, perhaps you can post here asking about it.

Does IBM have software

Does IBM have software developement centers in Egypt?  From what I have seen all centers seem to be points of resale.  And what is the best way for me to acquire a job?  Should I travel to Egypt for vacation and visit companies to look for job opportunities?  Advice would be well appreciated.

 Salaam,

Hmm working and studying

Hmm working and studying in Egypt in the same time is not the best idea that's based on my personal experience you wont find enough time for both tasks.

It wont be a problem attending the lectures because it will be usually in the weekends but the problem is finding enough time to study before
exams. It wont be easy to take a vacation before exams to study.

Yes IBM has a big development center in Egypt

Finding a good and fast software job in Egypt is not a big deal. There is a shortage in software developers in Egypt so if you are a good and experienced developer will find a job easily

There's a difference in the quality of education (and hence degree weight) between Egyptian and US colleges, so, you should take that into consideration. I've been fotunate to study at both countries and there's a huge difference (especially at the post grad level).

I would suggest that you explore your chances in the US (talk to your managers, find other companies, work as a consultant, work from home, work at college, find a suitable study program that won't exploit your time, etc...). Moving to Egypt isn't exactly the best career choice you can make (unless you intend to live here for good).

Thanks for all your

Thanks for all your replies.  Just to clarify I would like to relocate to Egypt for religious studies not post-graduate.  Thanks again for all your advice.

Transferring to IBM Egypt

Hi All,

I hope this reaches you all in the best of health and imaan.  So I finally put in a transfer request with my manager and she has agreed.  I am now trying to do some salary research.  What salary range should I expect at IBM Egypt?  I have been working at IBM for about 5 yrs (3 while in college, 2 as a full-time employee).  Thanks in advance.

Al Salaamu Alaikum

Al Salaamu Alaikum Ibrahim,

I was searching for "Work and Study in Egypt" and i came across your messages. I too work in IBM (US) and am looking into opportunities to go with my family to study (religious) in Egypt. I have two little kids ( 4 and 3 years old), so not a major problem there. Mainly interested in learning Arabic and memorizing Quran ( as much as i can Insha'Allah ). But i am an Indian citizen. Would that be a problem? Also what was the procedure you went through in asking for a transfer from your manager? Would i be able to work (atleast part time) in IBM Egypt? I have never been to Egypt.

Dear Hassa,

I didn't see any Indian developer in Egypt, I think the most suitable company for you is IBM Egypt. God with you isA.

Wa alaikum assalaam,

Wa alaikum assalaam,

I hope this message reaches you, your family and anyone else who is reading
this in the best of imaan and health.  I requested from my manager a
transfer to Egypt about a month ago.  I told her that one of my life goals is to spend some
of my youth learning more about my religion and made it clear to her that
although my career is still important to me, that I needed to balance my career
aspirations with my religious aspirations.  She was very understanding and
searched through IBM blue pages for the head-executive at IBM-Egypt and
informed them that she had an employee who would like to transfer to Egypt
As a result of this contact, our Egyptian colleges sent a list of job vacancies
for me to specify which I find most appealing.  I have sent this list back
and we are currently awaiting the next step.  As for being part-time I believe that shouldn't be a problem and would depend on the job.  But I can't give a definite answer until I arrive in Egypt and experience the work environment myself :).  I hope this helps.  If
you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Salaam,

Ibrahim
