Linux - which edition to use?
Salamu 3alikom,
recently, i decided to switch from Windows xp to Linux,
for the reasons known to most of u;
being openSource, better performance, more security ..... etc.
i've installed Linux Fedora 7 on my laptop Dell Inspiron 6400,
but unfortunately, i'm suffering from system hangs, difficulty to intialize wireless network,
unable to play DVD and can't play MP3, rm... except by command line
(it all failed using Totem, Xine media player, Rhythmbox media player)..
i believe Linux is a robust OS, with great performance & many utilities.
So, is there other Linux edition better to use as a beginner?
any help will be appreciated..

SA
Although this is not a Linux forums, but I will be happy to support.
Selecting the Linux edition depends on the personal satisfaction, you may like Fedora and don't like Mandriva ... but for any Linux distro, you should be able to configure your devices and play music files.
It vary from version to version,in some distros will be easy while others will be hard. but finally, it is doable.

SA,

hope Mandriva is really better regarding system hangs,
ease of drivers configuration, i think i should take care before more OS switching actions :)
sorry for inconvenience..
Salamo 3alaykom It is

It is important now to start to learn and use the Linux OS, especially for Java developers, cause i know from a lot of well experienced IT workers in big places like that extruding your Java knowledge with the Unix and Linux "which are approximately the same" is the exactly the upcoming needs for the the big companies.
To answer your question i want to say that Linux distributions doesn't have that difference, they are just like different flavors for the users, i tried SuSE, Fedora, Debian, and Ubunto. But it seems for me and for others i found their comments over the net that SuSE is preferred for beginners, i am finally using SuSE now and it is really the best for me after trying the other three distributions.
It is easy for installing, also it has a good package manager called YAST, i can't remember any "hang" for the system through these two years using it, also you will find strong support for your system from the SuSE offecial website, help, also the strong IRC support chat room from SuSE.
I hope that i helped.
Any other questions, you are welcome.

Use UBUNTU
SA,
Its too long time since my last post/comment here.
My laptob is INSPIRON | 6400 which is the same as you.
first of all I hate Redhat based Distros.
I'm currently running SUSE 10.1 which is not the latest version from suse and everything is working with me.
But I recommend UBUNTU/KUBUNTU to you I love this Distro.
When I switched from UBUNTU to SUSE the first time was because of wirless issues but currently this issue are fixed.
and regarding the ease of use I hate the time being on windows and many things I can't do on windows or lets say hard to do on windows without CYGWIN.
Anything is doable on Linux. Do you know that you can run most of the windows applications (ex: notepad, IE, ...) on Linux using either CrossOver or Wine.
