Client Server Chat Applet

Hello All, I have an idea to start with as a project, a client server chat applet. I'd like to have a powerfull one to be used in our website and may be other sites. I think if we have one we can advice our host to use it. waiting for your comments.

that is really good

salamo 3likom all it is a good start :) so will start our project from scratch or we can use an existing open source one?? i think using already exist one and we build over will be more usfull thanx

We have the 2 options, if

We have the 2 options, if there is a project which satisfy our needs we can use it! [Here|http://java-source.net/open-source/chat-servers] you will find a list of chat servers with java but almost all of them is a web based application which requires a Tomcat Web server. %%%What if the host is running Apache only? so we need a java desktop server to run independently on the host and the client may be applet.%%%Also the server can be applet.%%% Can you take a look on this list and tell us a conclusion? Regards,%%% Ahmed Hashim

that is ok

slamo 3likom ok i'll try to look for some projects that we may use :) i'll replay on u as soon as posible

Can we find a good one?

I think we need a chat functionality soon in Egjug, so i hope that we can find anyway of chat we can use, the chat supported by server is poor and not available. If we can find an Open Source chat server with applet client it will be fine and we can use it and contribute in it. So, if any one have a project to suggest it will be welcome. RE: Can we find a good one?

Unless someone else has other suggestions, or some are willing to create this project from the ground up (which would be rather nice), check out these: [Babylon Java Chat|http://visopsys.org/andy/babylon/index.html] (source provided) [jChatBox|http://www.javazoom.net/jzservlets/jchatbox/jchatbox.html] (customizable through an API, but source not included) [SorceryNet IRC Java Applet|http://sourceforge.net/projects/snirc/] (IRC-based, source provided, obviously) [CoolSmile|http://source.coolsmile.net/] (IRC-based, source provided) I guess any of these, except jChatBox, are hackable and can be configured to required needs and interface. ---- ''There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who can count in binary, and those who can't.''

We have a shared host

We have a shared host without JSP support, so we cann't add chat server to it right now.%%% About IRC, we have more than problem with IRC, the big is IRC is blocked with almost all firewall in organization, so we wont be able to adminster the IRC.%%% I don't like IRC applet solution (IMHO).%%% Did you see the current chat? http://chat.egjug.org it is powerd by AJAX. Opensource with PHP & MySQL. If we have a volunteer to customize it, it will be wonderful. -------------%%% __Ahmed Hashim__%%%

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But that won't be a Java-powered solution, unless the server-side uses Java-based technologies. And I thought this was all about a __Java-based__ one. Just where is this site hosted anyway? In the US or in Egypt? ---- ''There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who can count in binary, and those who can't.''

We are planing to have a

We are planing to have a Java Enabled hosting in the future.%%% So, for the time being we will use another solution rather than java.%%% The server in USA.%%% -------------%%% __Ahmed Hashim__%%%
